How the calculator works
Enter your height and sex, and the calculator shows two things: a healthy weight range based on Body Mass Index (BMI), and your ideal weight according to four formulas that doctors and dietitians have used for decades. Add your current weight to see your BMI and where it falls on the scale.
Healthy weight range (BMI)
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy weight for most adults. The range shown is the lowest and highest weight that keeps you inside those limits for your height.
- Below 18.5 — underweight
- 18.5–24.9 — healthy weight
- 25–29.9 — overweight
- 30 and above — obese
Ideal weight formulas
All four formulas start from a base weight for a height of 5 feet and add a fixed amount for every inch above that:
- Devine (1974) — created to calculate medication doses, now the most widely used.
- Robinson (1983) — a revision of Devine based on newer data.
- Miller (1983) — gives a slightly higher result for shorter people.
- Hamwi (1964) — the oldest formula, still common in nutrition practice.
Because they were designed for adults of 5 ft (152 cm) and taller, the calculator only shows the BMI range for shorter heights.
Limitations
BMI and ideal weight formulas do not account for muscle mass, bone structure, age or body fat distribution. An athlete with a lot of muscle can have a "high" BMI and be perfectly healthy. Use the results as a general guide, not a diagnosis, and talk to a doctor about your personal health.
FAQ
What is a healthy weight for 5'9"?
For a height of 5'9" (175 cm), a healthy BMI range corresponds to roughly 125–169 lb (57–76 kg).
Why do the formulas give different results?
Each formula was built from different population data and for different purposes. Looking at all four together gives a more realistic picture than any single number.
